Harry Maguire says he learned about his omission from England’s World Cup squad before Thomas Tuchel rang him, because the news had already leaked to the media. He described the call as “quite an awkward call,” a blunt account that turns a selection decision into a public embarrassment.
The timing matters because Maguire was not coming into this from nowhere. He had returned to form for Manchester United, won back an England place in March, and earned his 65th and 66th caps against Japan and Uruguay after almost two years out of contention. Yet when Tuchel named his centre-back options, Maguire was out and John Stones, Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Jarell Quansah were in.
That choice showed how Tuchel weighted experience against a different kind of squad logic. Stones, with 89 caps, was the only selected defender to have played more than 30 times for England, and Tuchel later said his “credit in the bank” helped him get in. Dan Burn had eight senior caps, Jarell Quansah had three and Trevoh Chalobah had one, but when Tino Livramento was ruled out injured, Tuchel turned to Chalobah rather than Maguire.
For Maguire, the frustration was not only the omission itself. He had been back in England contention after almost two years away, and his club revival had reopened the question of whether he had done enough to force his way into the final squad. Instead, the message that reached him first was the one already moving around outside the room. Even after the snub, he made his feelings clear on social media, while his family also defended him.
What remains unanswered is the part Tuchel never fully explained in public: why a player with Maguire’s recent club form and renewed international rhythm was left out, and why the late injury change opened the door for Chalobah rather than him. Until that is answered, the omission will read less like a clean selection call than a decision that arrived with its own leak trail.
