The Elba Shelter-in-place Order was lifted after a Dodge County Sheriff’s deputy was shot Sunday evening in the Town of Elba, ending a fast-moving standoff that had put part of the area on edge. The injured deputy was taken to UW Hospital, treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries and released early Monday morning.
Deputies were called to River Run Dog Park just before 7 p.m. Sunday for reports of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance and threatening people. When authorities arrived and tried to make contact, the man shot at law enforcement, hit the deputy, then ran back to his vehicle while deputies and police took cover. As other agencies rushed in to help, officials later moved to lift the shelter-in-place order and reopen Highway 73 between Highway 151 and the City of Columbus.
What happened inside that short window is the heart of the case. Officials said the suspect was found dead inside the vehicle when they got close, and early investigators believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A gun was recovered near him. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office said no law enforcement fired their guns during the confrontation, even as authorities described the shooting as an officer-involved incident.
That leaves one part of the episode still unresolved: what set the suspect off before deputies arrived at the dog park. Investigators are working that question with help from the Columbus Police Department, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the CCSO Emergency Response Team, the Dodge County Emergency Response Team, LifeStar EMS, Beaver Dam Fire Department, Beaver Dam Paramedics and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
For now, officials say there were no other suspects involved and no ongoing threat to the community. The immediate danger is over, but the investigation is only starting to sort out how a call for a disturbance became a shooting, a shelter-in-place order and a death within the span of a Sunday evening.
