The Milwaukee Brewers are looking at a possible move on the left side of their infield, and Cooper Pratt is now part of that conversation. With Joey Ortiz and Luis Rengifo struggling at the plate, Milwaukee may try to solve the problem with an internal promotion, a trade, or both before the August 3 deadline.
The search comes after David Hamilton became the club’s most productive left-side infielder over a two-week hot stretch, hitting.282/.364/.564 over 12 games. That kind of burst can buy time, but it also underscores how little offense the Brewers have gotten from the position group overall, especially with Ortiz carrying a 57 OPS+ and Rengifo at 52.
Rengifo’s path adds another layer. He signed with the Brewers as a free agent, and he cannot be traded without his consent until June 16, which narrows the team’s flexibility if it chooses to go outside the organization. That makes the internal options more than a theoretical fix. It makes them part of the short-term planning.
One of those options has already been tested in a major league game. During the series finale against the Athletics in Las Vegas, Andrew Vaughn was deployed at third base in the eighth inning and handled a 5-3 putout there. Pat Murphy’s decision showed enough trust in Vaughn’s experience and comfort to use him in the field, but it still takes little imagination to see why that cannot be treated as a permanent answer. He looked capable in a moment. He did not suddenly look like the long-term solution.
That is why Pratt, and even Jett Williams, matter now. Milwaukee is not searching for a cosmetic move. It is trying to find offense from a side of the infield that has not supplied enough of it, while keeping the option open to strike in a trade before August 3 if the right fit appears. The next decision will tell the story: a prospect call-up, a deal, or another stopgap while the same hole keeps asking for a better answer.
