left Barcelona with a reprimand on Saturday after the FIA ruled that his driving in FP3 was erratic, but stopped short of handing the driver a harsher penalty. The decision came before qualifying at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and closed out a stewards’ investigation into the 19-year-old’s actions on a timed lap.

That is why the case drew attention so quickly. Antonelli arrived in Catalonia with a healthy championship lead after his fifth consecutive grand prix victory in Monaco, yet he was still facing scrutiny less than a day later over a moment of frustration in traffic. During FP3, he complained on team radio after coming across on the number 18 car, then had to report to the stewards at 14:00 local time with a Mercedes representative.

The FIA said the stewards heard from Antonelli and team representatives from Mercedes and , and reviewed video, telemetry and in-car video before deciding the matter. In its findings, the governing body said Car 12 was affected by Car 18 when approaching turn 1, then the driver of Car 12 braked in front of Car 18 and prevented a pass. That, the FIA said, amounted to driving in an erratic manner.

There was still a line in the hearing that explained why the sanction did not go further. Antonelli admitted he had acted out of frustration and apologised for it, which appears to have weighed in favor of a reprimand rather than a penalty that would have hit his qualifying or race weekend more directly. The verdict leaves him free to continue the without a grid hit, but it also shows that a championship lead does not buy immunity when the stewards decide a driver crossed the line.

What comes next is simple, and still important: Antonelli goes into qualifying under the weight of a formal FIA warning, with no additional punishment announced. If Barcelona’s traffic was already making FP3 a test of patience, the stewards’ ruling has turned the rest of the weekend into a test of restraint as well.
