Barbara Flynn has turned a personal hobby into part of her screen work, saying she makes jewellery for Beyond Paradise and supplies pieces to the costume department of the drama. The 77-year-old said she even wears jewellery she has made herself as part of Anne Lloyd’s look.
Flynn was speaking while appearing on Love Your Weekend With Alan Titchmarsh, where she described how the craft began about 2000, when she wanted something to wear to a party and could not find anything. What started as a search for one piece grew into Barbara Flynn Jewellery, and she said the arrangement for Beyond Paradise began when the designer asked what she thought about jewellery.
She said her father had dabbled a little in silverware, which gave her an early start, and that finding gemstones opened up a wider world. From there, she said, she was able to offer pieces for the outfits chosen for her character, adding: “I make or I have made or own everything that I wear in the show.”
That behind-the-scenes role adds a small but unusual layer to a performer already familiar to viewers through Beyond Paradise and Open All Hours. It also means the jewellery seen on screen is not simply chosen for Anne Lloyd; in Flynn’s case, it is part of her own work, shaped by a business that uses gemstones, minerals and precious metals and has appeared at artisan boutiques across Cornwall and through social media sales.
The detail matters because it shows how a costume choice can become a performer’s own contribution to a series. Flynn did not just lend an opinion to the wardrobe team. She handed over pieces she had made, owned or worn before, and that means the look of Beyond Paradise carries a trace of Barbara Flynn’s craft as well as her character.
