The performance arrives with the San Antonio Spurs down 3-1 to the Knicks heading into Game 5, which gives the anthem spot extra weight. Guyton is a four-time Grammy nominee and has already been trusted with another high-profile pregame moment: she performed the national anthem before Super Bowl LVI in 2022.
For Guyton, the booking also fits a career built on firsts and visibility. She became the first Black woman to host the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2021, and she was the first Black woman nominated in the Best Country Solo Performance category at the Grammy. Her 2022 album Remember Her Name helped make her one of country music’s most recognizable current voices, alongside songs such as Home Movies, Somethin' Bout You and Lay It On Me.
That is what makes the matchup around her appearance a little more interesting than a standard championship ceremony. Guyton was born in Texas, but it is not clear whether she considers herself a Spurs fan, even with the team playing in San Antonio and the anthem taking place in its home arena. The choice puts a Texas native in front of a crowd watching the Spurs try to extend their season, while leaving the reason for her selection unstated.
What is clear is that Saturday will add another national-stage credit to a singer who has already crossed from country radio into major-event television. Unless there is another announcement, this will be the moment that matters: Guyton at center court before Game 5, and a Finals crowd hearing a familiar voice before a game the Spurs must win.
