Frank Leboeuf has put Rayan Cherki in the same conversation as Zinedine Zidane, saying the Manchester City midfielder is “a little bit like Zizou” after a debut season in England that delivered 10 goals and 15 assists. The former France defender said Cherki shows the kind of touch and timing that make people stop and watch, and that is what pushed the comparison beyond simple praise.
Cherki’s case has grown stronger since his £34 million move from Lyon to Manchester City in the summer of 2025. At 22, he did more than settle in: he scored one rabona goal, helped Manchester City win the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, and turned himself into a player who now draws headlines for more than flair alone.
That is why the comparison matters now. Leboeuf did not frame Cherki as just a highlight reel talent. He said the skill reminds him of Zinedine, but added that Cherki also seems to understand tactics and knows when to “listen to the music,” a way of describing a player who senses the right moment to hold the ball and the right moment to move it. In Leboeuf’s view, that is what separates a gifted player from one who shapes games.
The caution is built into the praise. Leboeuf pointed to players such as Hatem Ben Arfa as examples of what pure skill can look like without the same tactical control, and that distinction is where Cherki’s profile becomes more interesting. A player can dazzle and still be hard to fit. Cherki, by Leboeuf’s reading, is different because the talent comes with structure.
That leaves a bigger question for France, and it is not an abstract one. The national side has to find a role for Cherki in an attacking unit that already includes Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise. Leboeuf’s words suggest Cherki is not just being admired from a distance; he is being judged as someone who may have to earn space among stars rather than simply rely on reputation.
For Manchester City, the next phase will be about how Pep Guardiola uses him after a first season that proved the move was no gamble. Cherki has already shown that he can produce numbers, supply goals and add something unpredictable. The question now is whether that profile keeps expanding in the right system, or whether the comparison with Zinedine Zidane becomes the start of a higher standard he is expected to meet every week.
