Aston Villa are plotting an ambitious move for Brentford striker Igor Thiago, with Unai Emery seeing the 24-year-old as a player who could change the shape of Villa's attack. The interest is active this summer and follows a January approach that fell short on funds, but Brentford's long-term hold on the forward makes any deal far from straightforward.
Thiago's name is being searched now because he has given Villa a reason to look again. After an injury-hit debut season in west London, he answered with 22 goals in 38 Premier League appearances for Brentford, the sort of return that forces rival clubs to take notice. He moved from Club Brugge for £30m, and his scoring form has turned him into one of the more intriguing options on the market.
The attraction for Emery and his coaching staff is clear. Ollie Watkins thrives on pace, movement, intelligent pressing and space in behind defensive lines, while Thiago offers physicality, aerial dominance and a strong presence inside the penalty area. That combination is why Villa view him as a partner for Watkins rather than a straight replacement, with the idea being to give the side a different attacking route when games tighten.
Brentford, though, have little reason to make it easy. They extended Thiago's contract until 2031 earlier this season, which gives them leverage and removes any immediate financial pressure to sell. That also helps explain why Villa's January approach went nowhere: Brentford were under no need to cash in, and a summer move would almost certainly require a significant fee before talks could even move properly.
The one twist Villa still have on their side is time. Thiago's expected World Cup involvement this summer should give the scouting staff more chances to assess him, but it also means the chase may stretch on before any decision is made. For now, the question is not whether Villa like the player. It is whether they are prepared to turn admiration into a bid Brentford cannot ignore.
