Ajax have put Yann Sommer on a shortlist of experienced goalkeepers as technical director Jordi Cruyff pushes to strengthen a position that has become part of a wider rebuild. The former Borussia Mönchengladbach keeper is one of several names under review, with Ajax also keeping Marc-André ter Stegen in sight.
The timing matters because Ajax are trying to reset after four straight years without a league title. They finished fifth in the Eredivisie, 28 points behind PSV Eindhoven, were dumped out 0-6 by AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Cup round of 16 and came 32nd in the Champions League group stage, even as they secured European football next season through the Conference League play-offs.
Cruyff has been active since arriving as technical director in early February, and the goalkeeper search sits inside that broader effort to lift a squad that has fallen well short of Ajax standards. Sommer, 44 caps and long established at the top level, fits the profile of an experienced option rather than a long-term gamble.
That does not make the move simple. Sommer is on Ajax’s shortlist, but his Inter Milan contract runs until June, which means any approach would need to wait or require terms that work for all sides. He was also linked with Ajax in a report from Dutch magazine Voetbal International, underlining that this is a live possibility rather than idle speculation.
Ajax’s next step is the real story now: whether Cruyff goes for Sommer, turns to ter Stegen or settles on another candidate altogether. For a club still carrying the weight of four seasons without a title, the choice in goal will say a lot about how ambitious this overhaul is meant to be.
