Microsoft is weighing whether to pull Xbox apart and give the gaming business a new corporate shape, including the possibility of a spin-off, while preparing to lay off a significant chunk of the division. The company is also rethinking plans for its next-generation Project Helix console.
The timing matters because those decisions would affect one of Microsoft’s biggest consumer businesses at the same moment it is being trimmed and redirected. Asha Sharma has already won approval to invest heavily in Halo and Fallout, and she has said Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution would be Xbox exclusive, a sign that Microsoft is still betting on marquee franchises even as it questions the structure around them.
That shift is what has pulled attention back to Xbox Spin Off Potential. Microsoft has considered several structural options for the division, including making it a wholly owned subsidiary, forming a joint venture, spinning Xbox off entirely or selling the business, according to a report from The Information. None of those moves is said to be imminent, but the range of choices on the table shows how far the company is willing to go in rethinking Xbox.
The franchise focus also fills a gap in Microsoft’s game plan. Halo has not seen a new release since 2021, and the last mainline Fallout title was Fallout 4 in 2015. Pouring more money into those brands suggests Microsoft wants a smaller set of bigger bets, even as it reconsiders whether the Xbox label should remain housed inside the company in its current form.
What comes next is not a sale notice or a breakup announcement, but a period of internal weighing that could reshape how Xbox is run, financed and judged. For now, Microsoft has left open every major option and closed none of them.
