Donegal have kept the same starting XV for Saturday’s All-Ireland SFC clash with Cork after their convincing Round 1 win over Kerry. Cork, by contrast, have been forced into two changes for a match that now carries the weight of a live test between a team riding continuity and another trying to patch key holes.
The selection tells its own story. Donegal’s statement victory over Kerry in the opening round earned them the chance to back the same starters, with only bench alterations as Jamie Brennan and Caolan McColgan come among the substitutes. For Cork, the task is less straightforward after a Round 1 win over Meath was followed by injuries and suspension that reshaped the side for one of the biggest games of the weekend.
Ruairí Deane comes in for the injured David Buckley, while Seán Walsh replaces Colm O’Callaghan, who is suspended and unavailable for Saturday. O’Callaghan’s absence is the sort that changes more than one line on a team sheet. His midfield partnership with Ian Maguire has been regarded as one of the best in the country, and Cork now have to face Donegal without that axis in place.
That makes the contrast sharper. Donegal arrive with the same starting group that produced a major statement against Kerry, a performance that gave their management no reason to disrupt the formula. Cork, having already beaten Meath in Round 1, must now adjust on the fly and hope the changes do not upset the balance against a side that has started with conviction.
Saturday’s meeting will show whether Donegal’s continuity can carry over against sterner opposition, or whether Cork’s reshuffled midfield and defence can blunt it. If Cork can replace the influence of O’Callaghan without losing control in the middle, the game stays alive; if not, Donegal’s unchanged line-up will look even stronger before a ball is kicked.
