Manchester United are preparing an opening bid for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with the 21-year-old now a priority target as the club looks to strengthen in midfield this summer. West Ham’s valuation is the biggest obstacle. That view helps explain why they are understood to value Fernandes at around £80m, a figure United are unlikely to accept without serious resistance.
Fernandes gave West Ham more than energy. There is another reason West Ham may not be in a hurry to cash in. The club are not ruling out keeping Fernandes to help them win promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt, which leaves the England side of the equation in a different position from the buying side. United want midfield reinforcements now, and Fernandes fits that need, but West Ham still have reasons to hold firm if the numbers do not move quickly enough.
That clash between urgency and valuation will shape the next stage. United are preparing to make the move, yet the real question is whether an opening bid can start a negotiation or simply confirm that West Ham want a fee the market may not deliver.
