Houston is set to host seven World Cup matches, and the city’s tournament footprint is already widening beyond the stadium. Five of the Houston World Cup games will be in the group stage, with one in the round of 32 and one in the round of 16, all at Houston Stadium.
That schedule is why fans are searching now: Houston’s run of matches will bring World Cup traffic to the city across multiple stages, not just for one marquee night. The FIFA fan festival will be open every day of the World Cup just east of downtown, next to Shell Energy Stadium, giving fans a free place to watch every match.
For many Houstonians, the center of gravity will be Christian Pulisic, the most accomplished and most famous player on the U.S. national team, whose name will draw attention whenever the tournament comes to town. The festival is first-come, first-served, and organizers say it will include misting zones, water stations and shaded areas as crowds gather to watch.
METRO moved in step with that demand on Friday, launching the FIFA World Cup 2026 Commemorative Fare Pass for $32. The pass is valid for 10 days and can be used on buses, METRORail, METRO curb2curb and the 500 Downtown Direct service, giving riders another option as the tournament pushes more people toward downtown and the stadium district.
There is a catch in the free-admission pitch: the fan festival costs nothing, but the transit keepsake does. METRO said there are three different commemorative passes, each valid only for certain dates, and the agency is selling them only while supplies last. That split between a free watch party and a limited-run paid pass fits the way the World Cup is arriving in Houston — as both a public celebration and a business opportunity.
ABC13 has said the event is expected to draw Houstonians to fan gatherings and local businesses, and that is the broader test now. Houston will keep hosting matches during the World Cup, but the exact dates and opponents for its seven games have not been released, leaving the city’s busiest days still to come.
