Midland police say a traffic stop on Wednesday night turned into a gunfire exchange after a man ran from officers, drove a block over and then fired at them in the 4700 block of Comanche Drive. The suspect, identified as Victor Mata Villarreal, is now wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer.
Neighbors say they heard the shots around 11:30 p.m., and doorbell camera footage from nearby homes captured the moment with gunfire audible. Alejandra Ortiz said the sound hit her house hard and left her thinking someone was trying to force their way in. “It shook the walls of the whole house, it just felt like someone was trying to come in by force, but it was just the sound of it,” she said.
Ortiz said she had never heard anything like it before. By the time the night settled down, she said the block was lit by police cars and filled with unanswered questions. “It was just hectic all throughout the night, all the lights from the cop cars and everything, and we didn’t have any explanations or anything,” she said.
Police said the sequence started on Anetta, where Villarreal ran from the traffic stop before driving to Comanche. Officers say he got out of the vehicle and fired at them, then fled again. His car was later found nearby with no one inside, a detail that has left the manhunt open and the neighborhood without a clear end to what it heard that night.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the officer-involved shooting, and authorities are asking anyone who sees Villarreal not to approach him. Tips can be reported to Midland Crime Stoppers at 432-694-TIPS or the U.S. Marshals’ tip line at 1-800-WANTED2.
