The tournament bracket will be announced Monday, May 25 at noon ET on ESPN2, and that is when the path to Omaha becomes clearer. The search for the college world series schedule tends to sharpen at this point because the event is down to its final eight, even though 64 teams enter the bracket and 35 at-large bids are awarded alongside 29 automatic berths. By the time the series opens, every club that survives the field will have earned its place the hard way.
That final stretch is what gives the bracket its edge. Since 1954, the NCAA has split the tournament between automatic berths and at-large selections, and teams must finish better than.500 against Division I opponents to qualify for an at-large bid. The structure leaves little room for error, and it is why the road to Omaha is so crowded before it becomes so exclusive. The SEC has won the last six titles, a run that only raises the pressure on whoever survives this year’s bracket and gets to Omaha.
Omaha has hosted the Men’s College World Series since 1950, and Charles Schwab Field, which opened in 2011 after replacing Rosenblatt Stadium, can hold as many as 35,000 fans. For the teams that make it, the schedule turns from a bracket into a test of nerve, and the first answer arrives when the field is announced on May 25.
