The meeting matters because it lands in the middle of the short grass season, when players have just three weeks to get ready for Wimbledon and most try to play at least two of them. Rybakina has already collected two titles in 2026, winning the Australian Open and WTA Stuttgart, but she also comes in after a disappointing French Open performance that left more questions than usual around her form.
There is recent history here, and it leans both ways. Rybakina beat Maria in a second-round match in Beijing in 2023, taking the first set 7-5 before closing out the second 6-0. Two years later, Maria got the upper hand at Queen’s Club, beating Rybakina in their 2025 quarterfinal in two hard-fought sets, with the second set going to a tiebreaker. Maria went on to win the tournament.
That result is part of why this rematch carries weight. Maria has been steady on grass again this year, going 4-1 in grass matches in 2026 and arriving with 15 total wins, while Rybakina has lost eight matches this season. Even so, the Kazakh is still widely viewed as the stronger player and the favorite this time, which is exactly what makes the matchup interesting: Maria has already shown once that ranking and reputation do not decide this pairing.
Queen’s Club is one of the first real tests on grass each year, and this one is about more than advancing to the quarterfinals. Rybakina does not need to do much to remind people of her level; she just needs to avoid another slip against a player who has already beaten her on this surface at this event.
