Montgomery County authorities arrested Tiffany Butler on June 11 and accused the 31-year-old Sprakers woman of illegally receiving more than $50,000 in welfare benefits. Investigators say Butler is now facing felony charges after a joint case that centered on SNAP payments she was not entitled to receive.
The alleged loss is $50,525.00, a figure that gives the case its weight and explains why it moved quickly into court. Butler is charged with eight counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree and one count of welfare fraud in the second degree, according to the sheriff’s office.
That arrest came after a joint investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit, the Department of Social Services and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. Officials say the case stretches from August 2022 through June 2026, when Butler allegedly received the benefits while failing to report all people living in her household as well as all employment and earned income.
What has not been answered publicly is how Butler or her attorney intends to respond. The allegations go to the heart of the benefits system: whether the county had the information it needed to determine eligibility, and whether the payments should have been made at all. Those questions sit in the record now because investigators say the reporting was incomplete, but no response was included in the release.
Butler was being held pending arraignment in City of Amsterdam Court. For now, that makes the arrest the immediate development and the arraignment the next point where the case will either be contested or move forward on the charges already filed.
