CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez has said, “I dream of a World Cup with 64 teams” and called it “a great opportunity to do something that unites the world, to bring football to more people, and to have a completely different kind of celebration.” But FIFA has not officially decided the number of teams for 2030, and the World Cup’s move to 48 teams for the first time in 2026 remains the last confirmed expansion.
FIFA has also not yet published the official 2030 schedule, including how the opening phase will be handled across the six hosts. It has said it will allow about 11 to 12 days for travel and rest before the second game of the six teams playing in South America, and about five to six days for the remaining six group opponents. The basic answer to where the next World Cup 2030 will be played is now clear; the unanswered part is how far FIFA is willing to push the tournament’s size when it finally sets the bracket.
