Trey Young said he is being overlooked more than at any point in his basketball life, and Jaylen Brown was quick to answer. Young made the remark on a recent episode of The Pivot Podcast, then Brown responded by writing, “They gone move the bar.”
The exchange landed now because Young is trying to reset the conversation around him after a season lost to injuries. He said he was limited to 15 games last season, and he is now looking for a return that would match the kind of attention he once got simply by walking onto the floor.
Young did not frame the point as a complaint so much as a challenge. He said, “Even when I was in high school, I wasn’t this slept on,” and added that over the years he has learned there is “a lot of recency bias that goes on, especially if media...” That is the part of his argument that gives the comment weight: he is not denying the noise around him, only saying it can shift fast.
Brown’s reaction carried its own history. He averaged 28.7 points per game in the highest-scoring season of his career and took over as the Celtics’ lead playmaker when Jayson Tatum was injured. His response to Young was short, but it suggested the same thing Young was getting at — that public judgment can change almost overnight once winning starts.
That is why Young tied his own reputation so directly to team results. He said, “I know if we start winning, imagine the Wizards as a No. 1 team in the East next year. What people gonna be saying?” He followed that by saying he cannot get caught up in what people are saying now. The message was clear: if Washington turns, the conversation around him could turn with it.
The backdrop is not flattering. The Wizards went 17-65 last season and have not had a winning record since 2018. Young is hoping for a similar breakout campaign of his own after injuries limited him to those 15 games, and his comments suggest he sees the two things as linked: his standing and the team’s record.
That is what makes the next season matter more than a debate clip. If Young helps the Wizards take a real step forward in 2026-27, the label he pushed back on this week may not last long. If they stay where they have been, the skepticism around him will only get louder.
