Donna Vekic faced Marie Bouzkova in the final match of day three at Queen's after rain delayed the start of play but matches still got under way.
The day turned on more than one court. Amanda Anisimova beat Laura Siegemund 6-1 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals, while Iva Jovic defeated Alexandra Eala 6-2 6-2. But the biggest disruption came when Victoria Mboko retired in the second set of her singles match against Karolina Pliskova after a heavy fall.
Pliskova had led 6-2 after the opening set, and Mboko had been working her way back in the second before she lost her footing and went down. She was checked on after the fall and did not continue, leaving her fitness in question for a doubles match scheduled on Thursday alongside Serena Williams.
That was the concern hanging over the rest of the Queen's live coverage. Mboko had made her doubles debut with Williams the previous day, and the injury meant the pair's campaign was now in doubt. For Williams, the immediate issue is not the result of one match but whether her partner can take the court at all on Thursday.
So the late-night slot belonged to Vekic and Bouzkova, but the day was reshaped by Mboko's retirement. Queen's moved on to the next match, yet the more consequential update was whether the teenager would be fit to return in time for doubles with Williams.
