Joshua Henry started Tony Awards night with tacos from Birria, then ended it with the biggest prize of his career: Best Actor in a Musical. The win landed later that evening at the 79th annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall, after a day that had already taken him from an early rehearsal and matinee into the spotlight.
That same night, the celebration spread across Manhattan. Before the show, a Mastercard and Capital One reception filled the 11th floor of the Edition Hotel, where Carrie St. Louis sang two songs, including “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” for about 50 people. By the time Pink had finished her opening number and “All That Jazz,” the crowd had moved on, chasing the next room, the next drink and the next familiar face.
Rachel Zegler arrived at Late Night at Pebble Bar in a slinky lavender silk dress and welcomed guests upstairs on the fourth floor. She called her first Tony Awards experience “really amazing” and said, “It’s a really good environment.” The room had the feel of a after-hours checkpoint for the night’s winners and presenters, the kind of place where the conversation kept rolling long after the curtain came down.
Laurie Metcalf was there with a gin, cucumber and lime cocktail in hand, her Tony Award sitting on the table beside her. Nathan Lane joined her and the two stayed in deep conversation for at least 10 minutes. A few feet away, Kara Young called out to hug Colman Domingo. Elsewhere in the city, the cast of Ragtime marked its win for Best Revival of a Musical at Rosa Mexicano in Lincoln Center, adding another stop to a night that refused to stay in one place.
The split in the evening said as much as the speeches did. Some guests flashed silver tickets and headed to the official Tony Awards after-party at The Rink at Rockefeller Center, while others waited in line for Late Night at Pebble Bar. For Henry, the arc was simpler: tacos before the show, a trophy after it. The rest of the night was a Manhattan relay, and the next headline already had its answer — he had the prize, and the city had the parties.
