Motörhead has set the seventh Lemmy Forever ceremony for Download Festival 2026, with a tribute planned for Friday, June 12, at 15 p.m. in Lemmy's Lounge. A miniature version of Lemmy's special urn, holding some of his ashes, will be placed in a classic fruit slot machine for the occasion.
The announcement gives fans a fixed date to gather again around one of rock's most enduring figures, more than a decade after Lemmy died in December 2015 at 70 shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Download has long been one of the places where his memory is kept visibly alive. Lemmy played the festival in 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2013, and last year he was joined on stage by Sleš.
The ceremony also extends a pattern that has turned Lemmy's ashes into a traveling memorial. In 2024, some were displayed at London's Stringfellows club in an urn shaped like his signature hat, while a convoy of 55 motorcyclists on Harley-Davidson motorcycles carried the bust with his ashes to Rock City in Nottingham. Other portions have gone to the Rainbow Bar & Grill in Los Angeles, the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany and Bloodstock Open Air, where some are taken every year.
Todd Singerman, who took over responsibility for the ceremonies after Phil Campbell died in March, said fans should have a place where they can come, raise a glass, tell a story and spend a moment with Lemmy. He said the work is a responsibility the group proudly carries, because not everyone can travel to Hollywood to visit him and these places mattered to both Lemmy and the people who loved him. He also said that when Campbell died, the band lost an important family member.
What makes this year different is that the festival tribute will not be the final stop. After Download ends on the night of June 14 and 15, the same ashes will be transferred to the O2 Apollo Manchester, where another Lemmy Forever ceremony will be held before they remain permanently housed there. That leaves the festival as the opening salute and Manchester as the lasting home, even if the exact memorial spot in the city has not been spelled out.
For fans planning ahead, the sequence is now clear: gather at Download on June 12, then watch for the move to Manchester two nights later. The ceremony will be a one-day tribute, but the permanent memorial will give Lemmy a fixed place in the years that follow.
