Giannis Antetokounmpo’s trade chatter has shifted from noise to something more concrete, with Sam Amick saying the intrigue from the star’s side toward the Boston Celtics is real. The Milwaukee Bucks are now being watched for a possible move that could redraw the East.
That is why Bucks talk is spiking now. Antetokounmpo has been linked most often to Boston and the Miami Heat, and he is believed to want a destination that can contend for a title in the Eastern Conference. Boston keeps coming up because it may be able to land him without gutting the roster, a rare path for a player of his size and impact.
Amick said Miami remains the loudest noise around the league, and people he talks to believe the Heat had a deal close at the deadline. But he also said Giannis has questions about what Miami would look like after a trade, which is why Boston has stayed in the mix. In Amick’s view, the Celtics are “a pretty intriguing option in terms of being competitive,” and the respect for Joe Mazzulla matters in that equation.
Jaylen Brown is the obvious piece Boston could send back, and his contract is similar to Antetokounmpo’s. That matters because Brown could be the only player the Celtics have to move in a deal, preserving much of the core while still making the kind of swing that can change a franchise overnight. For Boston, that is the appeal; for Milwaukee, it is the price of even entertaining the conversation.
The larger friction point is that Miami may be the loudest name in the rumor mill, but Boston may be the cleaner fit if Antetokounmpo is looking at basketball first. Amick went further, saying it seems very likely the Bucks will have to deal him at some point and pointing to the fact that owner Jimmy Haslam publicly framed the timeline and then made a blockbuster move for Myles Garrett in the NFL, a sign that he is willing to pull the trigger when he decides the moment is right.
None of this confirms a trade is coming today, but it does make one thing clear: if Milwaukee finally opens the door, the Celtics may be the team with the best path through it.
