Netflix has halted pre-production on its untitled Hannibal drama, slowing a film that had been moving ahead with Denzel Washington set to play the ancient Carthaginian general. The pause came while producers and the studio work out the budget.
The timing matters because the project had been gathering momentum over the past couple of weeks. Netflix had been meeting with actors to join Washington, while Antoine Fuqua and his crew were scouting locations in Italy for a shoot planned later this year. For a production already in pre-production, that is the point at which calendars get locked, crews get hired and a movie starts to become real.
The film centers on Hannibal, the military commander who led Carthage against Rome, and it had been taking shape as one of Netflix’s larger historical dramas. Washington and Fuqua know how to navigate that scale together. They worked on Training Day, which earned Washington the Best Actor Academy Award, and later teamed up again on The Equalizer franchise, a partnership that helped make the project an easier sell inside the studio.
Even so, the pause shows that enthusiasm is not the same thing as approval. People familiar with the project said there were issues that still needed to be addressed before pre-production could continue, and the most immediate obstacle was the budget. That leaves the film in a familiar limbo for ambitious historical epics: the creative pieces are in place, the interest is there, but the numbers still have to work before cameras can roll.
For now, the hope is that the movie can still move forward at Netflix. The unanswered question is not whether Washington and Fuqua are attached, but whether the studio and producers can make the budget fit the scale of the story without losing the film they set out to make.
