Angela Lonsdale turned up in Emmerdale on Monday June 8 as Charity Dingle went to the police after an assault. The former Coronation Street star played the officer taking Charity’s statement, a brief but pointed appearance that viewers recognised at once.
For soap fans, the casting was the headline inside the scene. Lonsdale is best known for playing Emma Taylor in Coronation Street from 2000 to 2003, when she was known as Sergeant Taylor and later became one of the show’s familiar faces through Emma’s marriage to Curly on Christmas Eve 2000 and the birth of Ben on Boxing Day 2001. Since then she has also appeared in The Bill, Doctors, Wolfblood and Our Girl, but her latest role put her in the middle of one of Emmerdale’s most bruising storylines.
Charity’s visit to the station followed a violent episode broadcast on Sunday June 7, after Dr Caitlin Todd had already been using a secret to pressure her for cash. Todd had discovered that baby Leyla is actually Charity’s biological child, a fact Charity had kept hidden after agreeing to be a surrogate for Sarah Sugden and Jacob Gallagher. The situation became more tangled when Charity slept with Ross Barton, became pregnant with their second child while starting fertility treatment, and gave birth in a hospital lift with Ross and Mackenzie Boyd beside her. Only Chas Dingle knew the secret before that birth, and Todd had even stepped in to save Charity’s life afterwards.
That made the blackmail more than a passing threat. Todd overheard Chas warning Ross to stay away, kept making demands and eventually turned up at Charity’s home, where she found her asleep on the sofa and hurled abuse at her. By then Charity had turned to drink under the pressure, and Monday’s police report marked the first clear move in the story from private menace to public action.
What remains unclear is whether Charity’s statement will lead to an arrest or any immediate move against Todd. For now, the key development is that one of Coronation Street’s better-known alumni has walked into Emmerdale’s current drama at exactly the point where Charity can no longer keep the damage private.
