Fable used Xbox Games Showcase to unveil a new story trailer and confirm that Hayley Atwell is the voice and performance-capture actor behind Isabel, the game’s main villain. The reveal puts a familiar film and television name at the center of one of Xbox’s biggest fantasy returnees.
The trailer did more than show Atwell’s casting. It cut between fresh gameplay, new characters and story beats beyond the Hero, while also setting up fights with a Balverine and a giant toad. It also leaned hard into the series’ irreverent tone, with swearing running through the footage.
That is the reason the casting matters now. Fans have been waiting for a clearer picture of who will carry Fable’s story, and Isabel is not just another antagonist. She is described as a driven, powerful Hero trying to make right a tragic injustice, a figure shaped by grief and by the determination that grows out of it. Atwell’s role gives that character a recognizable face and voice before the game has even launched.
The casting also sharpens the story’s central contradiction. Isabel is framed as a Hero seeking justice, yet she stands opposite The Hero of Briar Hill and Humphry, her one-time guardian, putting her on the other side of the game’s moral divide. That split is part of what gives the character weight, and it is also why the studio leaned on Atwell, whose work spans film, television, theatre and voice roles. Craig Owens said her ability to combine vulnerability with strength made her the right fit, and added that her drive to get inside the character, along with the seriousness and grit she brought to the booth, impressed the team throughout recording.
The reveal leaves one major question open: when the game itself will arrive. For now, Fable has given players a clearer sense of its cast, its tone and the kind of feud that will drive the story, but not a release date to put on the calendar.
