A Saturday across several jurisdictions ended on northbound near Paddock Road when a driver crashed into several vehicles, was briefly chased on foot and then taken into custody.

officers were alerted at 2:47 p.m. to watch for a person traveling north on I-75 who was thought to be in a psychiatric emergency and tied to a possible domestic incident. Dispatch also said the driver was wanted on several felony warrants, including one for strangulation, and may have been carrying a firearm. The vehicle was spotted near the 13.4-mile marker, and officers tried to stop it before the driver failed to yield and sped away.

The pursuit moved through Butler County and other jurisdictions before returning to Hamilton County, where it ended in the crash near Paddock Road. That collision left the driver’s vehicle and several others damaged on one of the region’s busiest interstate corridors and brought emergency crews to the scene in the middle of the afternoon.

What made the case more volatile was the mix of concerns surrounding the driver. Police were already being told to look for someone in the midst of a possible mental health crisis and domestic dispute, but dispatch also flagged felony warrants and the possibility of a firearm, turning a traffic stop into a far more dangerous pursuit. Officers eventually had to chase the suspect on foot before arresting him.

All occupants in the suspect’s vehicle were evaluated and taken to local hospitals. Occupants of the other cars involved were checked by and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect’s identity had not yet been released, leaving the most basic question about who was behind the wheel unanswered even as investigators pieced together how a midday police response became a multi-county chase and a crash on I-75.
