Keeneland’s June 6 Pick of the Week centered on Race 10 at Saratoga, the Grade 1 Woody Stephens Stakes, with Civil Liberty, Crude Velocity and Solitude Dude named as the main win contenders for the $500,000 sprint for 3-year-olds. The race was set for 4:52 PM Eastern on Saturday, and the preview pointed bettors toward the same three horses as the most likely players in a seven-furlong test that can turn on one sharp break or one late move.

That is why Jose Ortiz is being searched now: the race carries Grade 1 weight, real money, and a short field of horses with form that can be weighed against each other in public before the gate opens. Keeneland also listed Obliteration and Englishman for exactas in second, giving handicappers a narrower path into the exotics while leaving the top of the board to the three horses most likely to attract attention.

Civil Liberty brings the kind of profile that can split opinion. He was the only horse in the field to win his maiden recently, but he was listed at 10/1 while Crude Velocity opened as the favorite. Civil Liberty earned his first win in his fifth race and backed it with a 101 Equibase Speed Figure last time out, after a career line that included a debut second, a third in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and a fourth in the American Pharoah Stakes. He also started his three-year-old campaign on March 7 with a neck defeat to Crude Velocity before returning to win easily on April 12.

Crude Velocity, meanwhile, arrived with the sort of recent numbers that explain why he was the horse to beat. He won the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile five weeks earlier, remained unbeaten in three races and earned a 116 figure in his second effort back on April 4. Englishman was part of that same Pat Day Mile conversation, having led easily from the start before lacking the kick Crude Velocity showed in the stretch, while Six Speed and Taj Mahal were expected to go for the lead and force the pace. That setup matters in a seven-furlong race, where a fast early rhythm can decide whether the favorite gets clear or gets tested.

Solitude Dude adds another layer. He had won all four of his one-turn races, took the Bay Shore Stakes on April 18 and posted figures of 94, 96 and 101 in his last three wins. He had also run in the Fountain of Youth Stakes on February 28, finishing behind Commandment and Chief Wallabee, but the stronger form shown since then gives him a live chance if the pace turns hot up front. With the race scheduled for Saturday afternoon, the next answer comes on the track: whether Crude Velocity’s recent speed holds, whether Civil Liberty can keep improving, or whether Solitude Dude turns one-turn consistency into a Grade 1 win at Saratoga.
