Randy Travis’s debut album, Storms of Life, turned 40 on June 2, 2026, and the milestone puts fresh attention on the record that launched his career. It also brings back an old question that still hangs over the album: what happened to the seven songs from those original sessions that have never turned up?
The anniversary matters because Storms of Life was the release that changed Travis from a struggling name in country music into an artist with staying power. By the time the album arrived on June 2, 1986, he had already spent years trying to break through after drawing little traction in the late 1970s, even after moving to Nashville at a time when labels were leaning toward a more pop-country sound. The record would go on to lead to his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and his career later brought seven Grammys and 16 nominations.
One song helped force the issue before the album even hit shelves. At Fan Fair in Nashville in 1985, a crowd of more than 20,000 cut Travis off with applause as he began singing On the Other Hand, which later became his first No. 1 hit. That response helped show what the industry had overlooked, and it underscored why the debut album mattered far beyond a single release date.
Mary said Travis initially recorded 20 songs for the album, even though he was limited to 10 for the debut release. The 2021 reissue added three songs, but seven from the original recording sessions are still missing. Mary said if anyone finds them, she wants to know, adding that she assumes Warner Bros. has them because they were all laid down in the studio and she would love to know what they are.
That missing material leaves the anniversary with a gap that is hard to ignore. The album that opened the door for Travis is still being remembered for what reached listeners and for what never did, and unless those seven songs surface, the 40th anniversary will also mark another year of not knowing exactly what else was in the vault when Storms of Life was made.
