Mason Greenwood has been claimed to have reached an agreement to join Fenerbahce, a move that could send fresh money back to Manchester United if it leads to a sizable transfer fee. The reported switch has not yet been fully confirmed by Marseille, but it is already being watched closely at Old Trafford because of the sell-on clause United kept when they let him go.
The reason this is moving so fast is the money attached to it. Fabrizio Romano said United’s clause in the Marseille deal is heavier than 5%, 7% or 10%, and that the club could collect extra funds this summer if Greenwood leaves for “consistent money.” For United, that matters now because any big transfer out of Marseille could finally turn an uncomfortable exit into a cash return.
Hakan Safi, a Fenerbahce presidential candidate, said the club had signed a four-year agreement with Greenwood and that he had agreed to join during the most valuable years of his career. If that is the framework now, it would be the latest turn in a career that has already moved through several exits: United suspended Greenwood in 2022, the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case at the start of 2023 after key witnesses withdrew, and he left on loan for Getafe during the 2023 summer window before joining Marseille on a permanent deal a year later.
That Marseille move was itself built on United cutting ties below his market value. Marseille paid around £26m and United secured a 50% sell-on clause, which is why even a new destination for Greenwood can still matter in Manchester. Reports this summer had already linked him with AS Roma, suggesting Marseille expected another sale before Fenerbahce entered the picture.
The friction is simple: an agreement has been claimed, but Greenwood is still expected to leave Marseille and the deal has not been fully confirmed by the French club. Until that is settled, the financial shape of any move remains unclear. If Fenerbahce have truly locked in Greenwood, the next question is not whether United benefit, but how much the clause is worth once the final fee is known.
