Sega has announced Sonic Pico Park, a new Sonic-licensed co-op game inspired by Pico Park, and it is shaping up as the series’ next multiplayer pitch rather than just another anniversary nod. The reveal came during a trailer marking Sonic’s 35th anniversary, with Sega saying the game will lean on the puzzle-driven chaos that made Pico Park a hit while adding Sonic characters, levels and special gameplay moments.

They are looking for the first co-op Sonic entry since Sonic Superstars, which arrived in 2023 and was the first Sonic game to fully push co-op as a main feature and to support play for 1-4 players. That makes the announcement a notable step for a series that has treated co-op as a recurring idea rather than a fixed identity. There is, though, an odd counterpoint landing at the same time. Tecopark said earlier this week that Pico Park: Classic Edition would be delisted on June 14 after it had been made permanently free on Steam by accident. The studio said players who already downloaded the game can keep playing it, and added that the first Pico Park game, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, will not disappear from memory even as the free version goes away. Tecopark said the Pico Park series will continue.
That overlap gives Sega’s announcement extra weight. One side of the franchise is pulling back on a free entry that helped define the original, while the other is expanding the idea into Sonic’s universe at a moment when co-op has become a selling point again. What happens next is straightforward: Sega still needs to confirm the practical details that matter most to players, including the release window and the platform list. Until then, Sonic Pico Park is less a finished product than a promise that Sonic’s next multiplayer turn is coming soon.
