Sega and RGG Studio have finally put a name and a year on the long-teased Virtua Fighter return: Virtua Fighter Crossroads is coming in 2027. Geoff Keighley revealed the debut teaser trailer during his Summer Game Fest 2026 showcase, turning a project that had been untitled since 2024 into the franchise’s next official step.
That matters now because fighting game fans have been waiting for clearer news ever since Sega first said in 2024 that it was bringing back several long-lost franchises. Jake Valentine, who reported on the update, noted that the new title answers the biggest question around RGG Studio’s project, even if Sega still is not giving away the full picture. For a series with a loyal following, a title and release window are more than window dressing. They are the first concrete sign that the comeback is real.
The tease also showed that Virtua Fighter Crossroads is not simply being treated like a safe sequel. Sega described it as a complete reimagining of the franchise, developed for modern consoles and PC from the start, and the trailer suggested a game that may not be a traditional Virtua Fighter experience even though it carries the name. The footage included Pai Chan and mixed story-driven single-player action with the familiar rhythm of traditional fighting game combat, which is enough to excite series fans and enough to make them wonder how far Sega is willing to push the formula.
That uncertainty is part of the story because Virtua Fighter has always carried old habits with it. Virtua Fighter 5 first arrived in arcades about two decades ago, and the series has traditionally come to life in arcades before finding a wider audience. Crossroads points in a different direction: a modern release planned for consoles and PC from day one, with Sega calling it, in effect, a new Virtua Fighter set in a city and story players have never seen before. Last month, gameplay was first shown at EVO, giving the project its first real shape beyond the teaser.
What Sega has not shown yet is the part fans will care about most. The company has said a special showcase after the Summer Game Fest stream will reveal more about Virtua Fighter Crossroads, and that is where the real test begins. The title and 2027 window have moved the game from rumor to release plan. Now the question is whether Sega is reviving Virtua Fighter as fans know it, or remaking it into something that only keeps the name.
