Leeds United have tied captain Ethan Ampadu to the club until 2030, ending any immediate doubt over the 25-year-old’s future after he agreed terms on a new deal on Thursday morning. The Wales international had one year left on his previous contract, but the extension gives Leeds a long runway with a player who was central to their season.
Paraag Marathe confirmed the agreement in a series of interviews and made clear how highly the club values Ampadu, saying he was instrumental all year and that everything he does is true leadership. Marathe also described him as one of the first pieces of business for the next window, adding that he is “a big part of our future.”
That matters because Leeds are coming off a season in which they finished 14th in the Premier League and secured survival three matches before the end, with Ampadu playing more than anyone else for the club. For a team trying to move on from a nervous year, locking in the player wearing the armband is more than a symbolic move. It gives Leeds a fixed point in a squad that needs one.
The contract news also lands against a more delicate backdrop: Daniel Farke’s future has not been settled. The Leeds head coach still has one year left on his contract, and Marathe said he hopes and expects Farke to stay for a while, while also stressing that talks about a new deal will happen “at the right time and in the right way.”
Farke himself has already made his position plain. On May 15, he said his mission was fulfilled after three years and that the club should now sit together in a trusting atmosphere and speak about new goals, with all the boxes ticked after three years of a four-year plan. Leeds have not announced a new deal for him, which leaves the club’s next step open even as one of its most important players is secured.
For now, the picture is straightforward: Ampadu is staying, and Leeds have kept hold of the captain they leaned on most. The unresolved question is when the club turns from celebrating a long-term signing to deciding whether the man in charge will be part of the next phase as well.
