Mary Ellen Eron, an 85-year-old AMC theater worker in Maryville, Tenn., was handed $146,317 after strangers responded to a viral video that showed her hauling a heavy black garbage bag and pushing a cleaning cart during her shift. The fundraiser, launched after the clip spread online, had more than 7,500 donors before donations were paused.
The video has been viewed more than 13 million times, turning a routine shift into an outpouring of support for a woman who has worked in movie theaters for 45 years. Brooklyn Green filmed the clip last weekend and captioned it, “Let’s secretly help retire this beautiful woman. No one deserves to work at this age,” then set a $200,000 target for a fundraiser meant to help Eron enjoy retirement.
On Wednesday, Green presented Eron with the total from the crowdfunding page. Eron, who helps the homeless and her local church, stared at the figure and said, “Oh my goodness. That’s a lot of money,” before thanking the people who gave. “Thank you so very much to all the wonderful people that have donated money to the GoFundMe,” she said. “I’m overwhelmed and certainly blessed by the Lord and you wonderful people. Thank you once more.”
The appeal did not reach its full target, but it still left Eron with a sum that would change her next chapter. Green’s fundraiser had reached $146,317 before donations were paused, leaving the gap between the goal and the total as the clearest sign that the response was big, but not boundless. The theater’s manager said retirement will be Eron’s decision, and that is now the only date that matters.
For a worker who has spent nearly half a century inside movie theaters, the money is only part of the story. What the video captured, and what the donations confirmed, is that Eron’s final exit from the job will not be forced by strangers or by a headline. It will be hers to make.
