Adam Elliott's season is over after South Sydney confirmed the 31-year-old ruptured a deltoid ligament in his ankle against the Cowboys in Round 12. The injury ended his year after just three games for the Rabbitohs and set him on a rehabilitation path expected to take about five months.
The timing matters because Elliott had only just settled into the side, and Souths now have to push on without him while a handful of players edge back for Thursday night's clash with Manly. Campbell Graham, David Fifita and Brandon Smith are expected to return, but Elliott will not be among them after hobbling off late in the loss to the Cowboys.
South Sydney's update leaves little room for doubt about how serious the setback is. The club said Elliott suffered a deltoid rupture in his ankle playing against the Cowboys, and that his recovery period is approximately five months. That is a brutal result for a player who signed on a one-year contract and had spent years building his way through the NRL, including 101 games for the Bulldogs, 24 for Canberra and 48 for the Knights before arriving at Souths for 2026.
Elliott tried to put a brave face on it on social media, writing that he would be back soon, that he had loved being out there with his brothers and that he was grateful and proud to represent the club. He added that he was ready for the challenge and that his boy and his girls had him sorted. His wife, Millie, replied: “Got you darling.” Teammates Jack Wighton, Euan Aitken and Tallis Duncan also sent messages of support.
The injury lands in a season already disrupted by South Sydney's wider availability problems. Talanoa Penitani tore his hamstring in the same game and is expected to miss 12 to 14 weeks, while Latrell Mitchell remains on the sideline with a back injury and is not expected back until after Origin 2, with Round 17 the earliest possible return. Wayne Bennett said Mitchell would not be picked for Origin 2 and would not be back until South Sydney play Parramatta after the rep period.
For Elliott, the immediate story is simple: the year is gone, and the next five months are about recovery rather than football. The harder question comes after that, when a one-year deal meets a body that has now been hit by injuries in successive seasons.
