Manchester United have moved for Atalanta midfielder Ederson as they push ahead with a summer overhaul in the middle of the pitch. The 26-year-old Brazil international has been linked with Old Trafford for a long time, but the need is sharper now with Casemiro on the way out and Manuel Ugarte underperforming.
That is why Ederson keeps coming up as a sensible fit for Michael Carrick's rebuild. United still have a classy Kobbie Mainoo, yet they need different options around him, and Ederson offers a blend that is hard to find: a midfielder who can play through pressure, carry the ball, join attacks and still handle a fast transition game. Tiago Nunes, who coached him at Corinthians, said Ederson can play with purpose or in transition, linking up in short spaces while also bringing the physical edge needed to break lines and reach the final third.
His path to this point helps explain the appeal. Ederson moved to Europe in January 2022 and was quickly a revelation at Salernitana, helping the club stay up in Serie A for the first time in its history before being sold to Atalanta in the next transfer window. The move to Gian Piero Gasperini's side asked something different of him, and the first season was only a qualified success, but by 2024 he was superb. Gasperini's system demands speed, movement and man-to-man sharpness, and Ederson has grown into that level after time to settle. Nunes said he was once an introverted player who needed support and confidence, but added that he matured step by step and that history now speaks for itself.
That record makes him look like a smart signing, but it does not make him the whole answer. United are trying to replace two midfield pieces at once, and one versatile runner, even a strong one, cannot by himself repair the balance issues that have built up in the squad. The attraction is that he can fit different partners and different rhythms; the risk is expecting one transfer to do the work of a full rebuild. For now, the question is not whether Ederson would help. It is whether United can complete the move on terms that make sense for a summer that already looks expensive.
