Amy Dowden went looking for dancers in her family tree and found something far heavier. On Who Do You Think You Are?, the Strictly Come Dancing star learned that her paternal great-grandmother, Louisa, died in 1921 aged 39 from breast cancer.
The discovery landed differently because Dowden, 33, was diagnosed with grade three breast cancer in 2023 when she was 32 and has already gone through chemotherapy and two mastectomies, most recently in November last year. She said learning about Louisa made her “even more grateful for the NHS” and took her back to the shock of her own diagnosis.
That is why the programme has struck such a nerve now. Dowden is preparing to return to Strictly Come Dancing this autumn, and the family history she uncovered adds a new layer to the recovery story she has already shared in previous television documentaries about her cancer and Crohn’s disease, which she was diagnosed with at 19.
Dowden said she had expected “plenty of drama” from the ancestry programme, but not the “rollercoaster of emotions” that came with it. Medical historian Dr Agnes Arnold-Forster told her that cancer was incurable in Louisa’s day, meaning she would have faced the disease without chemotherapy or any modern treatment. Dowden said thinking about Louisa leaving behind her husband Bill and six young children made her visibly emotional on camera.
The programme did not stop at cancer. Dowden said it also uncovered rumours of a family murder and explained why her grandfather was put up for informal adoption, a thread that left the family history looking less like a neat lineage than a set of old wounds still partly closed over. Dowden said she sent her parents daily updates while filming, and she seemed most struck by how much of her own story was already present in the family she had not yet met on screen.
For Dowden, the most important part of the reveal is not mystery but recognition. She now has a named link to the disease that marked her own life in 2023, and as she heads back to the ballroom this autumn, that connection gives her return a different kind of weight.
