Russell T Davies has put a date on the next Doctor Who update, saying fans should expect some sort of press release in about a week or two. Speaking on Radio 2 after being asked by Gary Davies whether an announcement about a new Doctor was coming soon, he said: “There is a press release lumbering through the.”
That is the clearest sign yet that the long-running sci-fi show is heading for another turn in the spotlight, and it comes at a moment when viewers are already watching closely for news about who will lead the TARDIS next. Davies went further and said: “You will get an announcement,” then added, “I promise you in about a week, two weeks, there will be some sort of press release, and yet I can hear the gears slowing down even as I say that. You know this place!”
The timing matters because Doctor Who has been in a period of uncertainty since Ncuti Gatwa left a year ago in The Reality War, the final episode of season 15. That episode ended with the Fifteenth Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper, a return that immediately set off debate among fans because she was not credited as the Doctor. Piper has said she would love to return to the Whoniverse and described being given the chance to step back on the TARDIS one more time as something she could not refuse, though she made clear that who, how, why and when were still to be revealed.
There is also a separate question hanging over the schedule. The Sun reported that the Doctor Who Christmas special may instead air at Easter 2027, even though it had been expected to arrive over the festive period, and said producers were still searching for the next person to take over the role. The declined to comment when contacted by Radio Times, leaving Davies' tease as the only fresh signal that an announcement is coming soon.
For now, the answer to the question fans keep asking is simple: something is due, and it sounds close. What remains unknown is whether the release will finally settle the delay report, confirm the next Doctor, or do both at once.
