Matt Turner is going to the 2026 World Cup. Mauricio Pochettino named the goalkeeper to his 26-player roster, putting Turner on the U.S. squad that will go into the tournament with one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the pool.
The selection lands now because Turner’s path back into the picture runs through New England, where he returned to get more playing time ahead of the World Cup. He logged 2,070 minutes after that move, enough to give the national team a body of work to judge instead of just reputation.
Turner’s case has been built on more than club minutes. He has 53 caps and 27 clean sheets for the United States, and his international résumé already includes the 2021 Gold Cup title plus back-to-back Concacaf Nations League wins in 2022/23 and 2023/24. Those results made him a familiar figure in U.S. goal for years, long before this roster was set.
The roster also frames the margin for error around him. The United States is in Group D with Türkiye, Paraguay and Australia, and it opens group play against Paraguay on June 12 before meeting Australia on June 19 and finishing the group stage on June 25. One name missing from another tournament squad underscores how narrow these decisions can be: JD Gunn was not one of the 26 players to represent Panama at the tournament.
There is still one question inside Turner’s selection that the roster itself does not answer: how much of his World Cup role will come from those New England minutes, and how much will depend on the competition for the starting job once the matches begin. What is clear is that the move home did what Turner needed it to do. It kept him in the conversation, and now he is on the plane.
For the Americans, the timing matters beyond the goalkeeper spot. Gillette Stadium in Foxboro has been renamed Boston Stadium for the 2026 World Cup and will host five group stage matches, one Round of 32 match and one Quarter-Final match, placing a familiar New England venue at the center of the tournament Turner is preparing to play in.
