The stakes are unusually personal because James has spent years talking about the dream of sharing the floor with his son. Bronny’s future with the Lakers now hinges on whether that remains the path. If James agrees to a significant pay cut, it would likely be only if Bronny is joining him, which ties a family milestone directly to the team’s roster math.
There is still real basketball value here, too. The 41-year-old led the Lakers to a first-round playoff series win over the Rockets without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves for most of that matchup, a reminder that he is still capable of carrying a team in a short series.
