Jay-Z gave Philadelphia a private preview on Friday night, playing a concert just before he is set to headline the 2026 Roots Picnic on Saturday. Beyoncé was spotted in the crowd, headbanging as her blond hair swanged while Jay-Z worked through classic songs in the set.
The show matters because it arrived right before one of the festival’s biggest booked moments: Jay-Z and The Roots are scheduled to share a headlining bill in 2026, a reunion that has been framed as 25 years in the making. The Roots Picnic is moving to Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia for the first time, and the two-day festival also includes Erykah Badu, Kehlani, Brandy, T.I., Mariah the Scientist, De La Soul, Tamar Braxton, Ledisi and Jermaine Dupri.
That made Friday night feel less like a warmup than a test run. Fans who caught the private concert were already reading the small cues for what it might mean, including speculation that Jay-Z had cut his signature locs after he kept his hoodie on through much of the performance. The set did not answer that question, and it did not settle another one either: whether he was using the private show to preview new music for the Roots Picnic or simply leaning on the songs that built his name.
What is certain is the scale of what comes next. Shawn Gee has described moving the Roots Picnic to Belmont Plateau and bringing Jay-Z together with The Roots as bucket-list moments, and the weekend in Philadelphia now sits between that reunion and another major date on Jay-Z’s calendar, when he is expected to take over Yankee Stadium for a two-night extravaganza in July.
