A 17-year-old boy is in critical condition after he fell from a vehicle while celebrating the Spurs' victory late Thursday night in San Antonio. Police said the teen suffered a head injury and was taken to a hospital with severe trauma.
Officers were notified Friday morning about the incident in the 300 block of West Dickson Avenue near Southwest Military Drive, putting a painful end to what had started as a night of celebration. The injury came after San Antonio's win over Oklahoma City, the kind of result that had already pushed fans onto the streets after earlier games such as the 118-91 rout that forced a Game 7 and the 103-82 victory that helped power the run.
A family member told officers the teen was celebrating when he fell from the vehicle, and that detail now sits at the center of an investigation that has not been closed. Police described the incident as tragic and preventable, and the San Antonio Police Department urged people celebrating to stay inside vehicles, follow traffic laws and obey officers' directions.
The boy remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday as detectives continued to piece together how the fall happened and what led up to it. For his family, the celebration that ended with sirens and a hospital stay is now being measured in the most basic terms: whether he survives and how much he can recover.
