Fran Hennessy has set herself a sharp deadline: the 21-year-old says she wants to become the youngest-ever undisputed world champion within the next 12 months. With only eight professional bouts behind her, she is chasing a pace few fighters ever manage, let alone one that would put her ahead of Gabriela Fundora’s record at 22.
The timing matters because Hennessy is back in action this Saturday on the undercard of Adam Azim’s bout with Steve Claggett at Wembley Arena in London, and she is using the fight to stay busy while the bigger opportunity develops. She said Aurora De Persio is the perfect opponent for that purpose, and the date gives her another chance to stay sharp before a possible title shot later this year or early next year.
Hennessy is the WBC mandatory challenger at 118lbs and expects Cherneka Johnson to be the woman in front of her when the fight is ordered. She said she believes Johnson may already have an unofficial date in the diary, but added that her team will keep pushing for the bout because undisputed status is the goal. If Johnson keeps hold of the belts, Hennessy would then be due to fight for all four of them.
That pursuit is being built on a January night that forced Hennessy to learn fast. When Adam Azim’s showdown fell through, she was elevated into the main event and went on to beat Ellie Bouttell by majority decision. She described that fight as a dogfight and said it gave her a useful dose of everything that comes with a tougher, more exposed night in the ring.
It also changed how she handles pressure. Hennessy said she was very nervous the first time she headlined a Boxxer show, especially because she had never carried that responsibility before, but the reaction in the arena helped rather than hurt her. She said she was used to cheers, but hearing boos as well made it a better learning experience, and she now says she has learned to take that sort of scrutiny in her stride.
That is the part that makes her title chase more than a bold line on a fight card. Hennessy is still young, still active and still unbeaten, but the route to an undisputed championship depends on Johnson being available, the WBC moving when expected and Hennessy keeping her own momentum intact. For now, the next step is De Persio in London; after that, the real wait begins.
