Lee Mazzilli will be introduced to Mets fans at Citi Field on Saturday afternoon as the club inducts him and Bobby Valentine into its Hall of Fame. The ceremony comes during a three-game weekend against the Miami Marlins, turning a regular homestand into a tribute to two familiar figures from another era.
That is why Mazzilli’s name is drawing attention now. Fans are not just showing up for baseball; the first 15,000 through the gates on Friday will get a Bobby Valentine Disguise giveaway with a fake mustache and glasses, and the first 15,000 on Saturday will receive a Mazzilli and Valentine players pin. Mazzilli is expected to walk out to his old position with the Brooklyn-Italian section of the borough cheering, while Valentine will step out for the first time as a Mets Hall of Famer.
The induction lands at a time when the Mets are still trying to keep their season moving. They entered the weekend 4.5 games out of the third National League Wild Card, with Miami five games back, so the three-game set against the Marlins carries more than ceremonial weight. Friday night’s matchup was scheduled to feature Max Meyer for Miami and Freddy Peralta for the Mets at 7:10 p.m. ET, followed Saturday by Tyler Phillips against Christian Scott at 4:10 p.m. ET and Sunday by Janson Junk at 1:40 p.m. ET.
The Hall of Fame class is not finished yet. Carlos Beltrán is the third member, but his number 15 retirement and induction ceremony are not coming until September, leaving Saturday to belong to Mazzilli and Valentine alone. That split gives the weekend a two-part feel: one celebration for the alumni on hand now, and another for Beltrán still ahead on the calendar.
For Mets fans, Saturday is the part of the story they can see in person. Mazzilli’s return to his old place on the field, Valentine’s first walkout as a Hall of Famer and the pin in the hands of 15,000 fans make the afternoon feel built for memory, even as the standings keep the present from standing still.
