Anthony Gordon has signed for Barcelona from Newcastle United for a significant undisclosed fee, ending a three-and-a-half-year spell on Tyneside and giving the La Liga champions another forward with proven output in England and Europe.
The move comes after Gordon, 24, built a strong case at Newcastle United, making 152 appearances and scoring 39 goals in all competitions. He arrived from Everton in January 2023 and helped Newcastle qualify for the UEFA Champions League in his debut season, before adding 11 goals in 35 Premier League appearances the following campaign and earning an England call-up for the March friendlies, when he debuted at Wembley against Brazil.
His final Newcastle campaign was his best. Gordon scored 17 goals in all competitions, including 10 in Europe, featured in every game on the club's road to the 2025 Carabao Cup final and struck vital goals in both legs of the semi-final win over Arsenal. He also represented England at Euro 2024 and was named Player of the Tournament at the 2023 European Under-21 Championships, underlining why the transfer has attracted attention beyond Spain.
Newcastle did not hide the significance of the deal even as it let him go. Eddie Howe said Gordon had been a big part of the club's success and would go on to succeed at Barcelona and with England, while Ross Wilson said interest had come from a number of Europe's leading clubs over time. That sits awkwardly beside the fact that Newcastle are still losing one of their most productive players for a fee they have not disclosed, after a period in which he became central to the team's rise.
Gordon's own words at the end of the move explain why this one feels personal as well as professional. He said he owed Newcastle a lot because he had arrived feeling quite lost in both life and football, and added that the club had given him belonging, identity and the stage to perform. Barcelona have their signing. What remains unclear is how the club will shape the contract, with the length and structure still unconfirmed after a transfer that changes the profile of both sides involved.
