Shane Walsh did not just abandon Rick Grimes in the hospital on The Walking Dead. In the season 1 finale, TS-19, he sneaked back inside during the outbreak, shoved a hospital bed against the door and gave Rick the few extra moments he needed to survive.

The hospital was already collapsing, soldiers were executing sick patients to keep the infection from spreading after death, and walkers were pouring through the building when Shane made his move.
