has worn the captain’s armband more than anyone else under , but the still has not officially named its captain for the 2026 World Cup. That leaves the 38-year-old defender in pole position without the job being made public.

The question is drawing attention now because the tournament is nearing and the Americans are still without a formal choice. , who captained the U.S. at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, was blunt when asked who would lead the side in 2026. “Your guess is as good as mine, honestly,” he said, before adding that he could not care less who gets the armband because it is “a privilege and an honor.”

The numbers help explain why Ream keeps coming back into the frame. Pochettino has rotated the captaincy during his 19-month tenure, giving the armband to twice and most recently to in a friendly against Portugal in March. Ream, though, has been the constant. He has served as captain 16 times in Pochettino’s 23 games in charge, a clear sign of trust from a coach still sorting out the leadership structure ahead of a home World Cup.

Pochettino has not sounded like a manager searching for a ceremonial figure. He has said Ream has the experience, knows what it means to play in Europe and travel with the national team, and has the values, humanity and character to help the group day to day. He also has described leadership in a national team as something simpler than club life: you do the right things, sometimes say one word and sometimes say nothing at all. That profile fits Ream better than most of the roster, especially on a squad where only a few players regularly captain their club teams, and most of them are in MLS.

That is what makes the unresolved part matter. Jozy Altidore, another former U.S. captaincy figure, said the choice is important, especially in a home World Cup, when the player first out of the tunnel carries extra weight. For now, Ream looks like the strongest answer to a question the federation has not yet answered out loud. Unless Pochettino changes course, the Americans appear to be leaning toward a veteran voice they already trust — but they still have not said so publicly.
