Norwich City have tied captain Kenny McLean to Carrow Road until 2028 after confirming the 34-year-old has signed a new two-year contract. The move gives the club one of its most dependable senior players for the next two seasons and, if he sees it through, takes his stay to a decade.
The timing matters because McLean had been due to be out of contract next summer, and Norwich had only triggered the one-year option in his previous deal during Johannes Hoff Thorup's reign last season. Instead, the club moved early to secure a player who has become central to the side since arriving in Norfolk in January 2018 and who has now made 310 appearances for them.
That record has pushed him past Iwan Roberts on Norwich's all-time appearance list, after he moved beyond the former striker's 306 appearances and then edged past Russell Martin on 309. Last season he remained an integral part of Philippe Clement's side, making 45 appearances and ending the campaign as Player of the Season, a reminder that the club's captain is still delivering at a level that justifies the faith around him.
McLean said Norwich did not have to offer him the new terms, pointing to the short talks that led to the deal and the trust he has built with the manager since he arrived. He said he wants to repay that confidence with performances and by helping the team every day, and added that he is still trying to improve at 34. He also said he can see success ahead at Norwich and wants to be part of it, which is why the decision to stay felt simple once the discussions began.
The one gap left open is how much Philippe Clement helped shape the final decision, with McLean saying only that the relationship has grown quickly and strongly. What is clear is that Norwich have secured a player whose influence has only grown with time, and if he finishes the contract he will become the first Canaries player since Wes Hoolahan in 2018 to reach a decade at the club.
