Hungary has added an exceptional truck traffic ban for Saturday, 30 May 2026, after the Ministry of Transport said heavy traffic is expected around Budapest and on motorways and expressways across the country during travel. The new restriction runs from 05:00 to 17:00 and is followed by the standard ban from 22:00 on Saturday until 22:00 on Sunday.

The order applies to domestic and international heavy goods vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 7.5 tonnes, regardless of EURO emission standard. For carriers, that means a full day of tighter movement rules in Hungary on a date that already had a different ban timetable, and the sudden morning closure was introduced even though the original schedule did not include it.

The ministry made the decision after consultations with police. Transport organisations and criticised the move, underscoring the strain the restriction could place on freight operators moving through the country at one of the busiest sporting weekends of the year. The measure is also meant to ease pressure on roads around Budapest, where traffic is expected to be especially heavy as fans and vehicles move toward the final.

Some traffic is still exempt. The ban will not apply to live animals, fresh milk and dairy products, fresh and frozen meat, bread, perishable food products, fresh vegetables and fruit, grain, or humanitarian aid. For perishable goods, the transport document must carry the marking “perishable,” a detail that will matter for carriers trying to avoid delays and roadside disputes.

There is still a practical question for shippers beyond the ban windows themselves: outside July and August, trucks are not allowed to return during the restriction from the border to their base or to the nearest unloading point. That rule, combined with the extra Saturday morning ban and the overnight restrictions that follow, leaves little room for recovery if a convoy is caught on the wrong side of the timing. The next confirmed period begins at 22:00 on 30 May and lasts until 22:00 on 31 May, keeping the disruption in place through the end of Sunday.
