The pirate-themed Big Boss Diamond sank off Paradise Island on the Mediterranean coast on Friday, May 29, after taking on water in Akvaryum Bay, with 148 people on board. Rescue teams raced to the boat and brought everyone safely ashore.
The passengers included British holidaymakers and 20 children. The Muğla Governorship said there were no casualties, injuries or health problems after the evacuation, making the sinking a frightening incident that ended without loss of life.
That is the part that matters most today: a full boat went down in less than an hour, yet every person on it survived. The vessel had been carrying close to 150 people when it began to sink, turning what should have been a seaside excursion into an emergency response.
Big Boss Diamond is described by its owners as the biggest pirate ship in Turkey and a family party boat that takes holidaymakers around several Turkish islands. For £35, passengers can get unlimited beer, cocktails, vodka and wine, a detail that helps explain why the boat has become a familiar sight for tourists along the coast.
There is still a gap in the story. Some passengers said the engine caught alight before the vessel went down, but the cause of the sinking has not been confirmed. The operator later said on Instagram that the crew was safe and would continue trips with Big Boss Yagna, even as questions remained over what happened in the water near Paradise Island.
For now, the clearest fact is also the most important one: 148 people were on board when Big Boss Diamond went under, and every one of them was pulled to safety. What caused the boat to sink is the question that still needs an answer.
